Revisiting the Fry’s Past: Another Cool Rebuild

Posted on February 18, 2024 by Michael Molenda

I think what makes this one unique is that the customer chose an AMD video card. The vast majority of builds I did were Nvidia cards. The card is an RX 5700 (reference card) which is still a decent card. I should know, my card is an RX 5600XT which is the card right below this one. So, without further ado…

I had already removed the video Gard. Needless to say it was much older. Might have been an GTX 780 or 980 from the era of the other hardware. Let’s get it stripped out…

Everything is removed except the storage and the optical drive. This was 2019 and optical drives were still relevant. I still own a couple but they go pretty much unused. Physical media still has a place in the present and in the future, IMHO.

The new parts:

MSi X470 Gaming Pro Motherboard
16GB Patriot Viper RAM (2*8GB) Steel Series
AMD Radeon RX 5700 GPU
Thermaltake ToughPower 850W PSU
AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPU (not Pictured)

Motherboard installed. Not sure why I didn’t build outside the case and POST-test here… It only takes 1 time of a building the machine fully to find out the motherboard (especially) is bad before you start testing outside the case first…

The RX 5700 GPU reference model. They all had the blower-style fans that are effective but not really as desired as a traditional dual or triple fan configuration.

Almost done. Curiously, I still haven’t put the CPU in. Maybe it was not available to me when I started. Hence the lack of POST-test and now the machine is almost done but no CPU. Bold move, Cotton.

Now, it is installed. I am going to guess that it is a Ryzen 7 CPU because it has the RGB version of the stock cooler. Those were only on the higher end CPUs. I wish I knew what it was exactly. Looks far better than the original PC and much higher spec’d. The wire you see there goes the fan that is installed on the side panel of the case.

Looks good. Pretty successful. I always enjoyed these type of builds. And user still has all of his storage, etc and doesn’t have to start over like a new PC…

Hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane with me. I have many more builds that I can share. Until next time…
