However, I have becoming more interested in it as a hobby. I started taking a lot of pictures when I got my Canon A610 digital camera and a decent flash memory card. Not great pictures, just tons of them. Snapshots. Now that I have been watching a photo podcast on the TWiT network called TWiT Photo. This show focuses on the art of taking pictures and not necessarily about the technical aspects or equipment. Many of the things they talk about could be applied to a point-and-shoot camera as well as a DSLR. A good photo comes from composition and not necessarily the equipment.

Of course, the better the equipment, the shaper the image.

We have a nice selection of cameras of a pocketable compact point-and-shoot (Canon SX 200is), a compact mega zoom (Nikon P500), and a DSLR (Nikon D5000) that I got Dana. I use it more than she does now. That wasn’t the case a year ago… Of course, in a pinch, we have our iPhone 4s. It makes good but not great photos. Good enough for when another camera is not available…

So, this weekend, I am taking a photo composition class that was given to me by Dana for my birthday. I can’t wait. I have actually been studying the technical aspects and physics of photography. Or at least of the camera. Now, I would like to take better pictures instead of tons of snapshots. Here is a new shot I made today.

I love how the new lens I have for our DSLR can blur the background and make the subject of the picture to “pop” out of the photograph. I learned how to use aperture to control the depth of field. This is at f/2.2 (35mm).

So, look for me to post a blog or a photo gallery from the class this weekend. It is at Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. I think this will make a good setting for a composition class. I can’t wait!

BTW, I always have thought that Dana has a much better eye for composition. Maybe after the class, we will be equals!

Sure, I don’t really aspire to become a professional photographer.
