{"id":373,"date":"2009-07-31T07:28:39","date_gmt":"2009-07-31T11:28:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mmolenda.com\/oldblog\/?p=373"},"modified":"2009-07-31T07:44:47","modified_gmt":"2009-07-31T11:44:47","slug":"my-progressive-nation-2009-review-tabernacle-atlanta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mmolenda.com\/oldblog\/?p=373","title":{"rendered":"My Progressive Nation 2009 Review (Tabernacle, Atlanta)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I should start off by saying that I went because I am a big fan (probably a notch below &#8220;hardcore&#8221;) of the headliner, Dream Theater&#8230; so maybe, this will seem somewhat &#8220;fanboyish.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Show starts at 6:00PM, so I was late due to having this silly thing called &#8220;a job&#8221; that I had to do during the day.\u00a0 I missed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scalethesummit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Scale the Summit<\/a>, but I heard some pretty cool stuff on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/scalethesummit\" target=\"_blank\">MySpace page<\/a>.\u00a0 They are an instrumental band, so I could listen to them, but only a bit at a time.\u00a0 I love instramentals, but vocals are nice, too. \ud83d\ude09\u00a0 So, I can&#8217;t review their set.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Scale The Summit\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_001.jpg\" alt=\"Taken between sets. Missed the set.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I did get there in time to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigelf.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">BigElf<\/a>.\u00a0 They are an interesting band.\u00a0 In some ways, they felt like a heavy version of a Pink Floyd, at least the keys very Floyd like.\u00a0 I enjoyed their set.\u00a0 The songs they played (none of which I remember their names) were better than what I had heard on their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/bigelf\" target=\"_blank\">MySpace page<\/a>.\u00a0 I will have to give them a second look when I have time to visit their MySpace page and listen.\u00a0 Perhaps, I will be buying one of their cd&#8217;s in the future&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"BigElf\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_002.jpg\" alt=\"BigElf on stage\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">BigElf on stage<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.zappaplayszappa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Zappa Plays Zappa<\/a>.\u00a0 Interesting concept.\u00a0 Dweezil is a very talented guitarist and there are still legions of Frank Zappa fans.\u00a0 I, however, never listened to his music before this show.\u00a0 I did enjoy the set.\u00a0 I might end up checking out some of Zappa&#8217;s music.\u00a0 The band he brought into back him was amazingly talented&#8230; just as talented as Dweezil, himself.\u00a0 They are great to watch, Zappa fan or not.\u00a0 Check out their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/zappaplayszappa\" target=\"_blank\">MySpace page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Zappa Plays Zappa\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_003.jpg\" alt=\"Zappa Plays Zappa on stage\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Zappa Plays Zappa on stage<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally&#8230; the main event&#8230; the 800lb gorilla in the room&#8230; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamtheater.net\" target=\"_blank\">Dream Theater<\/a>&#8230; let&#8217;s start with the setlist:<\/p>\n<p>1.) A Nightmare To Remember<br \/>\n2.) Prophets Of War<br \/>\n3.) Sacrificed Sons<br \/>\n4.) A Rite Of Passage<br \/>\n5.) The Dance Of Eternity<br \/>\n6.) One Last Time<br \/>\n7.) Solitary Shell [extended]<br \/>\n8.) Take The Time [the end was extended, too]<br \/>\n&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-<br \/>\n9.) The Count Of Tuscany<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"A Nightmare to Remember - DT\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_004.jpg\" alt=\"DT on stage... A Nightmare to Remember\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">DT on stage... A Nightmare to Remember<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All I can saw is &#8220;WOW.&#8221;\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.myspace.com\/dreamtheater\" target=\"_blank\">Dream Theater<\/a> [MySpace link] really wowed me for having such a short set (around 1 hour 45 minutes).\u00a0 The show started with a song on their latest release, Black Clouds &amp; Silver Linings called, &#8220;<strong>A Nightmare to Remember<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"DT .. more rom ANTR\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_005.jpg\" alt=\"Still ... A Nightmare to Remember\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Still ... A Nightmare to Remember<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">They played songs from almost all of their studio releases.\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Prophets of War<\/strong>&#8221; is not my favorite DT song, in fact, one of my least favorites, but was actally pretty cool live.\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Sacrificed Sons<\/strong>&#8221; is really cool song that has a very mellow opening but finishes pretty heavy.\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>A Rite of Passage<\/strong>&#8221; is their first single from BC&amp;SL and a heavy song with an interesting instrumental section featuring a section using the iPhone as an instrument.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Seeing &#8220;<strong>The Dance of Eternity<\/strong>&#8221; and &#8220;<strong>One Last Time<\/strong>&#8221; from Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory [still my favorite DT release] was a real treat for me.\u00a0 &#8220;<strong>Take the Time<\/strong>&#8221; from Images &amp; Words is a fan favorite and awesome song&#8230; the extended version of &#8220;<strong>Solitary Shell<\/strong>&#8221; was nothing short of amazing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"Soliatry Shell (Extended)\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_006.jpg\" alt=\"Jordan on the keytar\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jordan on the &#39;keytar&#39;<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">DT really does amazing extended versions&#8230; and to end it with &#8220;<strong>The Count of Tuscany<\/strong>&#8221; (from BC&amp;SL) was a great way to end it.\u00a0 That song has a great ending to it and makes a great encore song.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<div style=\"width: 586px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" \" title=\"James singing\" src=\"http:\/\/www.mmolenda.com\/oldblogpix\/PN09_007.jpg\" alt=\"James sining the end of The Count of Tuscany\" width=\"576\" height=\"432\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">James sining the end of The Count of Tuscany<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I have to give the setlist a 9.5\/10.\u00a0 I am just not a big fan of &#8220;Prophets of War&#8221;
